Already licensed and planning to work interstate?

Your current licence or registration may be recognised in another state. BLS checks whether mutual recognition, automatic mutual recognition or a fresh application applies before you quote or contract there.

Start with the right application.

  • Check whether your current licence can be recognised
  • See which interstate application or notification applies
  • Understand any local conditions before taking work

Can your current licence be recognised where you are going?

Australia does not have one national builder licence. The receiving regulator decides the equivalent occupation, and local exclusions, conditions or notification requirements may still apply.

  1. 01

    Is there an equivalent occupation?

Australian Government guidance describes mutual recognition as a way for a licence holder in one jurisdiction to receive registration in another for an equivalent occupation.

  2. 02

Mutual recognition, AMR or a fresh application?

The route depends on the occupation, jurisdictions involved and whether the applicant is an eligible individual. Notification rules, exclusions and local requirements still apply.

  3. 03

    Are you moving into Queensland?

Queensland does not participate in the national AMR scheme. Interstate licence holders generally need to use the relevant Queensland mutual recognition application pathway.

  4. 04

Will all of your current work be recognised?

The receiving authority determines the equivalent occupation. Home licence conditions, equivalent work scope and local restrictions can limit what is recognised.

  5. 05

    Mutual recognition is not RPL

Mutual recognition deals with an existing occupational licence or registration. RPL is a separate RTO assessment of skills against a qualification.

Check both sides before taking interstate work.

Your current licence

The receiving state
Check the equivalent occupation, application or notification route and local restrictions.

Recognition depends on the relevant route and regulator requirements. It is separate from RPL, and your current licence does not guarantee the same rights interstate.

BLS reviews your current licence and checks the receiving state’s recognition process, equivalent class and local requirements.

Help with the application

You know the work. We help get the application sorted.

  • Review the class, restrictions and expiry on your current licence.
  • Check the likely equivalent occupation in the receiving state or territory.
  • Confirm whether AMR, mutual recognition or a fresh application applies.
  • Separate the individual recognition process from company, nominee or business licensing.
  • Prepare the required application or notification before relying on interstate rights.

Who this is for

  • Builders and trades who already hold a current interstate licence or registration.
  • Licence holders moving state, taking an interstate contract or expanding a business.
  • Applicants who want conditions and equivalent work checked before relying on recognition.

When another service may fit better

  • Applications that need legal, financial or disciplinary advice outside BLS’s service.
  • Situations where the required work history, qualifications or records cannot be provided.

Know what is included before you proceed.

Licence and registration applications vary by state, class and how much preparation is needed. The free check gives BLS enough information to explain the service and provide a quote.

What affects the quote

The quote depends on where you are applying, the type of application, what records you already have and how much preparation is still needed.

Included work
BLS confirms the included application and evidence work before you proceed.
Other fees
Regulator, RTO, insurance, police check and other third-party fees are separate unless a proposal expressly includes them.
Qualification gaps
RPL or training is recommended only where a genuine qualification gap is identified.
Assessment
The regulator or RTO assesses the application or qualification and makes the final decision.
